Are you trying to print a JPEG on an offset press but don't want to use CMYK? In this tutorial, I'll show you three proven methods to convert rasterized images (JPEG, PNG, etc.) into spot colors using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
Whether you’re creating a artistic Duotone or needing to isolate specific brand colors from a logo, these prepress workflows will ensure your files output correctly for your press operator.
In this video, you’ll learn:
01:20 Method 1: The Duotone/Monotone Approach: Converting a grayscale image into a high-depth two-color job using Pantone colors and custom curves.
04:55 Checking Separations in InDesign: How to verify that your Photoshop Duotone is correctly recognized as a spot color swatch.
06:15 Method 2: Custom Spot Channels: Using the Color Range tool to isolate specific parts of a JPEG (like a logo or text) and mapping them to new Spot Channels in Photoshop.
10:45 Verifying Spot Plates: How to toggle CMYK channels off to see exactly what will print on your offset plates.
12:05 Method 3: The Grayscale TIFF Hack: A quick way to colorize a simple logo directly inside InDesign using the Direct Selection tool.
14:05 Prepress Verification: Using the Separations Preview in InDesign to double-check your red, teal, and blue plates before sending to the plate maker.
Why this matters: Standard CMYK printing can't always hit vibrant brand colors, and printing a 4-color process for a 2-color job is a waste of money. Mastering these spot color techniques gives you complete control over your final print output and production costs.
