Load balancer (ALB, Application Load Balancer) This is the front door. Users connect to it, not directly to your servers. It has a DNS name (like xxx.elb.amazonaws.com) that your domain points to through Route 53. It listens on ports through listeners (for example HTTPS:443), and this is where the SSL certificate is installed. The ALB decrypts the HTTPS traffic and then forwards the requests onward. Target group This is the list of backend servers that receive the traffic, such as EC2 instances, IP addresses, or containers. It defines which port and protocol the ALB uses to talk to them (often HTTP:80 or HTTP:8080) and runs health checks, so traffic only goes to servers that are healthy.
