The name “Madhav” is not a mere chant—it is cosmic power contained in letters. The name “Madhav” is a weapon; it will destroy all fear from its very root. The name “Madhav” rapidly melts karma. “Madhav” is a name immersed in Radha’s love. Radha did not call Krishna by any other name—she called them “Madhav.” When Radha said “Madhav,” the entire creation stopped to listen. So, in the three sandhyas (trisiṁdhyā), the recitation of the name “Madhav” (japa) and the Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapurana are not just options—they are divine armor (protective shields). With these armors, the name of any other God can also be recited. In a verse from the Bhavishya Malika, there is a description of this. अष्ट बाहु रे जे अष्ट आयुध, कलि शेषे जनम हेबे माधब। माधब नाम कु जेहुं जपइ, जनम मरण त ताहार नाहिं” ”Lord Mahavishnu will appear at the end of the Kali Yuga—meaning in the present time—as the Kalki avatar. He will hold eight weapons in eight arms, and he will descend onto the earth bearing the name ‘Madhava.’ The text further says that whoever will continuously chant ‘Madhav’ will be freed from the cycle of birth and death during the present junction of Kali Yuga and Satya Yuga, and they will attain the supreme abode (Param Pad).” Madhav Madhav He who listens to “Madhav”. Chanting Madhav There are multiple meanings of the word “Madhava” . Let us try to understand it one by one. 1) One who is the Lord or consort of ‘Ma’ (Goddess of fortune, Lakshmi devi/Devi Radha). Lord Krishna and his consort are eternally and constantly associated with each other, and are Inseparable. Her power is invincible and awe-inspiring and She is equal to Lord Vishnu. She is the Supreme Being who lives in the hearts of all beings of the Universe and She is endowed with divine forms. In Lakshmi Sahasranama, She is called the Supreme Prakriti who possesses the six qualities (Sad gunas)- Jnana, Bala, Aisvarya, Veerya, Shakti and Tejas. She is one with Him, and yet remains distinct like the moon-light of the cool-rayed moon. She is endowed with all glory and is eternal. Her dharma is same as that of Lord Narayana. 2) Another meaning of the name ‘Madhava’ is as follows: One who is attained through the Madhu vidya, by practicing Mauna, Dhyana, and Yoga. The reference to this comes from the Mahabharata – madhuvidya avabodhatvat dhavatvad va shriyo anisham | maunad-dhyanat ca yogas ca viddhi bharata madhavam || (Udyoga parva 68.4) Meaning: Here, ‘Ma’ stands for Mauna, ‘dha’ stands for Dhyana, and ‘va’ stands for Yoga. He is experienced by the seeker who has stilled his mind through mauna, dhyana, and yoga practices. Alternatively, it can be said that He is Madhava because He is endowed with mauna, dhyaana, and yoga – He silently observes the physical, mental, and intellectual activities of all beings, and is ever the non-interfering Observer. 3) Another meaning of the word ‘ Madhava’ is One who is the Lord of knowledge. In this interpretation, ‘Ma’ stands for knowledge, and ‘Dhava’ is Lord. The support for this interpretation is from Harivamsa, wherein Lord Shiva states as follows – ma vidya ca hareh prokta tasya isho yato bhavan | tasmad madhava namasi dhavah svam iti shabditah|| (Harivamsa purana 3.88.49) Meaning: “O Hari! You are the Lord(Dhava) of ‘Ma’ ( Transcendental knowledge); Hence you are named Madhava, the Master of ‘Ma’”. 4) Another meaning of the word is Madhukule jatatvat Madhavah – One who is born in the race of Madhu, a Yadava. 5) One more meaning of the word ‘madhava’ is explained as follows: Madhavah yasya sa Madhavah – One for whom there is no other Lord. This interpretation is included as one of the explanation by Thirukkallam Sri Nrsimha Raghavachariar in his commentary on Bhagavad Gita. In the context of Arjuna calling Lord Krishna as Madhava, the word Ma refers to the transcendental knowledge and Lord Krishna as the master of transcendental knowledge,who dissipated this knowledge to Arjuna in the form of Bhagavad gita.
