Far west of Tahiti lies Maupihaa, also known as Mopelia, a remote atoll in French Polynesia with only 2.6 km² of land surrounding a large Pacific lagoon. Population figures have varied over time—French Polynesia’s 2017 census recorded just 20 residents—and life here has historically revolved around coconuts, copra and the resources of the surrounding ocean.
But Maupihaa hides an extraordinary piece of history. In 1917, the German commerce raider SMS Seeadler, commanded by Felix von Luckner, ran aground on the atoll’s reef, stranding its crew during World War I. Remains of the ship can still be found around Maupihaa.
Journey to this rarely seen corner of French Polynesia and discover what everyday life looks like on an isolated atoll where a tiny community, a vast lagoon and an extraordinary wartime story meet in the middle of the Pacific.
