On July 9th, 1958, the remote and serene Lituya Bay in Alaska became the site of the largest tsunami ever recorded. What appeared to be a peaceful fjord—calm waters, a narrow entrance, and the striking Cenotaph Island—turned into a deadly trap when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake triggered a landslide that hurled 90 million tonnes of rock into the bay. The result was a wave that reached an unimaginable 1,720 feet in height. This video tells the gripping true story of three boats caught in the bay that night: the Edrie, the Badger, and the Sunmore. Through firsthand survivor accounts, historical context, and scientific insight, we explore how some managed to survive the wave—and why others weren’t so lucky. Lituya Bay’s unique geography makes it one of the most dangerous bodies of water in the world, capable of generating mega tsunamis unlike anywhere else. Could it happen again? And how close did we come to even greater tragedy that night? If you’re drawn to real-life survival stories, hidden dangers in nature, or the raw power of geological forces, this is a story you won’t forget.
