*What if your athletes aren't afraid of making mistakes—but afraid of how you'll react when they do?* An athlete makes an error. The coach yells, "Shake it off! Next play!" But here's the real question: *Have we actually taught our athletes HOW to recover?* In this week's Coach's Corner, we continued our conversation about transformational coaching and developing the person carrying the talent—not just the talent itself. We challenged coaches to examine how their words, reactions, and coaching methods influence an athlete's confidence, mental toughness, and ability to respond to adversity. 🔥 FIVE QUESTIONS EVERY COACH SHOULD CONSIDER *1. Are Athletes Afraid of Mistakes—or Our Reactions?* When an athlete makes an error, do they focus on the next play or immediately look toward the bench? Our body language and words can either build confidence or create fear. *2. Are We Teaching Recovery—or Just Demanding It?* We tell athletes to shake it off, but emotional recovery is a skill that must be taught and practiced, just like any physical skill. *3. Can We Correct Without Destroying Confidence?* Accountability doesn't require humiliation. Great coaches correct mistakes while helping athletes understand how to improve. *4. Are We Practicing How to Respond to Failure?* We practice physical skills for hours. But how much time do we spend teaching athletes how to respond when things go wrong? *5. Are We Building Confidence or Dependence?* Our goal should be athletes who can eventually coach themselves through adversity—not athletes who constantly need our approval. 🛠️ THIS WEEK'S PRACTICAL COACHING TOOL *THE 3-QUESTION MISTAKE RESET* After an athlete makes a mistake, ask: **1. WHAT HAPPENED?**\ Identify the mistake objectively, without blame. **2. WHAT'S THE ADJUSTMENT?**\ Help the athlete identify one specific improvement. **3. WHAT'S YOUR NEXT RESPONSIBILITY?**\ Redirect their attention toward the next opportunity. *That's correction without humiliation. That's accountability with instruction. That's transformational coaching.* 💡 THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAY *"You cannot demand a mental skill you haven't helped develop."* We cannot simply demand confidence, resilience, or mental toughness. We must intentionally teach those skills. The goal isn't to develop athletes who never make mistakes. *It's to develop athletes who know how to recover when they do.* 🎯 THE COACH'S CHALLENGE At your next practice, pay attention to how you respond when an athlete makes a mistake. Ask yourself: *"Am I helping this athlete recover—or am I adding to the pressure they're already feeling?"* Make one intentional change this week. 🏆 ABOUT COACH'S CORNER *Real Coaches.
