I Discovered How People Make A Living In This Beninese Village 🇧🇯

Doga is a village in Kpomassè Commune, in Benin’s Atlantique Department. Located in southern Benin, Kpomassè is an area where agriculture, fishing, and small-scale food production remain an important part of everyday economic activity. Away from the larger cities, the landscape gives a closer look at the work that supports local communities. In Doga, I got to see some of the different ways people make a living, from working on tomato farms to fishing around the nearby waterways. Agriculture is closely connected to the surrounding environment, with farmers cultivating crops that supply local markets and contribute to the food system in the region. I also had the opportunity to see the process of turning cassava into garri, from the preparation of the cassava to frying it. It was a simple but interesting reminder of how much work can go into producing foods that are familiar across West Africa. Beyond the activities themselves, visiting Doga offered a closer look at the people and skills behind rural production in Benin. These are parts of the country that can easily be overlooked when travelling only through the major cities, but they reveal another important side of how communities work, produce, and earn a living.
