In break-through precedence for Native American women (and men) independent film and television producers, Sandy Osawa [Makah] was selected in 1974 by KNBC-TV of Los Angeles to produce a 10-part series of half-hour programs on American Indians for national broadcast through flagship stations of the National Broadcasting Company's television network.
For its 30-minute "Survival" program, series host JOHN KAUFFMAN (Nez Perce; 1947-1991) interviewed famed movie actor and civil rights activist MARLON BRANDO and Northwest treaty rights advocate Hank Adams in 1975.
"Never confuse the size of your paycheck with the size of your talent." ~Marlon Brando
In the succeeding 40 years, Sandy Osawa - with husband Yasu Osawa - have continued their stellar careers in producing a stream of outstanding and award-winning film and video programs featuring major historical and contemporary Indian figures and personalities as well as issues of continuing critical significance.
Public and school libraries, Indian organizations and institutions and tribal governments and agencies should be encouraged to secure this entire catalog for distribution and availability to the full range of students and interested adults among their citizens and constituencies.
"When they laid down their arms, we murdered them. We lied to them. We cheated them out of their lands. We starved them into signing fraudulent agreements that we called treaties which we never kept. We turned them into beggars on a continent that gave life for as long as life can remember. And by any interpretation of history, however twisted, we did not do right. We were not lawful nor were we just in what we did. For them, we do not have to restore these people, we do not have to live up to some agreements, because it is given to us by virtue of our power to attack the rights of others, to take their property, to take their lives when they are trying to defend their land and liberty, and to make their virtues a crime and our own vices virtues." ~Marlon Brando
