Imphal, Oct. 24: Manipur People’s Party (MPP) spokesperson Rojesh has questioned Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s claim that free movement is possible in Manipur, asking why people continue to face difficulties while travelling to different places.
Speaking at a press conference held at the MPP office near Kangjeibung, Imphal, Rojesh alleged that the ground reality contradicted the government’s claims of normalcy and peace in the state.
Citing a Manipur Police report, he said that of the 150 cadres reportedly expected to be present at the Kuki Suspension of Operations (SoO) camp at Shingai, only 18 were found there, including just one person identified as an SoO cadre. He alleged that the discrepancy raised questions about compliance with the SoO ground rules.
Rojesh blamed the government’s failure to take appropriate action for the continued unrest in the state. He said that if peace had truly been restored, as claimed by the Chief Minister, the public would not continue to experience insecurity and conflict.
He also criticised Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam for his reported statement that security could not be provided to everyone in every location.
Rojesh questioned the responsibility of the Home Minister, stating that protecting the lives and property of the people was a fundamental duty of the government.
Alleging that the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state were allowing armed groups to operate while communities, including Meiteis and Nagas, continued to face insecurity, he said such developments were unacceptable and could deepen divisions among communities.
Rojesh further expressed concern over a memorandum submitted by some Congress leaders to the Governor, alleging that it failed to explicitly demand the withdrawal of the Kuki SoO arrangement. He said that merely calling for proper monitoring of the SoO agreement would not address the underlying problem.
He asserted that the withdrawal of the Kuki SoO arrangement was essential to achieving lasting peace in Manipur.
