Ingredients
• 1 cup seedless dates (khajoor), deseeded and finely chopped
• ½ cup almonds (badam), dry roasted
• ½ cup walnuts (akhrot), dry roasted
• 2 tbsp cashews (kaju), dry roasted
• 1 tbsp desi ghee
• 1–2 tbsp roasted sesame seeds (til), for coating
• 1–2 tbsp chopped pistachios (pista), for garnishing
Optional:
• Dry coconut powder for coating
• Honey or a little sugar, only if you prefer it sweeter
⸻
👩🍳 Procedure
1. Roast the dry fruits
Start by dry roasting the almonds, walnuts and cashews separately on a low to medium flame.
Roasting the dry fruits brings out their natural flavour and gives the mithai a lovely roasted, slightly smoky taste and a beautiful crunch.
Allow them to cool slightly.
2. Crush the dry fruits
Roughly crush the roasted dry fruits using a mortar and pestle.
The key here is not to make a fine powder. Keep them coarse so that you get small pieces of nuts in every bite.
You can also pulse them briefly in a mixer or simply chop them with a knife.
3. Cook the dates
Heat 1 tablespoon desi ghee in a pan.
Add the chopped dates and cook on low to medium heat for around 2–4 minutes, stirring continuously.
Use soft, good-quality dates so they soften and become slightly mushy while cooking.
Once the dates come together and become soft, switch to low heat.
4. Add the dry fruits
Add the coarsely crushed roasted almonds, walnuts and cashews.
Mix everything really well until the dates bind the dry fruits together and you have a soft, sticky mixture.
There is no need to add refined sugar because dates are naturally sweet.
If you prefer a sweeter mithai, you can add a little honey or sugar according to taste.
5. Shape the mithai
While the mixture is still warm, take small portions and shape them into laddus.
You can also press the mixture into a greased tray and cut it into squares to make dates dry fruit barfi.
6. Garnish
For the laddus, coat them with roasted sesame seeds and garnish with chopped pistachios.
You can also use dry coconut powder, more chopped nuts or any garnish of your choice.
And that’s it—your homemade festive mithai is ready! ❤️
