Baker Viaduct Takes Shapes for the Next Generation of Trains | TransPennine Route Upgrade

The TransPennine Route Upgrade continues to transform the railway between Dewsbury, Mirfield and Huddersfield, with major progress visible at Baker Viaduct, Ravensthorpe and Huddersfield Railway Station. This retrospective update begins at Thornhill, where work continues on the approach to the new Baker Viaduct. The future railway alignment will cross Thornhill Road, continue along a new embankment and connect with the viaduct before heading towards Ravensthorpe and Huddersfield. The large crane previously used to install the viaduct spans has now been removed, with a smaller crane working around the remaining precast concrete deck sections. Further east, work is progressing around the future Ravensthorpe grade separation, where the new fast lines will pass through a redesigned railway layout before continuing towards Huddersfield. Vegetation clearance is also under way ahead of construction of the new cutting near Calder Road. The video also looks at the future Ravensthorpe Railway Station, which is currently expected to open in 2028, together with signalling and telecommunications work taking place in the area. At Mirfield, overhead line equipment continues to appear as preparations for electrification progress. The newly installed infrastructure now extends into Mirfield Railway Station, close to where the new Down Fast line begins. The update then moves to Huddersfield Railway Station, with detailed photographs showing progress on the extended subway, new island Platforms 5 and 6, staircase, lift shaft and canopy structures. By Sunday evening, however, one of the planned canopy sections over Platforms 4 and 5 had still not been lifted into position. With the crane preparing to leave the site, questions remain over why the lift did not take place as planned and whether strong winds could affect another attempt. The restored middle section of the historic Huddersfield train shed canopy is also nearing completion, while work continues rapidly on the new island platform and subway extension.
