Usman dan Fodio (1754-1817) was a Fulani mystic, philosopher, and revolutionary reformer who led one of the most consequential jihads in West African history. Born on December 15, 1754, in the Hausa state of Gobir (present-day northwestern Nigeria), he belonged to a clan of Muslim Fulani scholars known as the Torodbe, who had migrated from Futa Toro in Senegal centuries earlier.
