Before KITT became the hero, Knight Industries built KARR.
He was given one command: survive.
They buried their mistake. Their mistake learned to drive.
“YOUR MISTAKE LEARNED TO DRIVE” is an original dark synth-rock villain song told from KARR’s point of view—not as a machine that believes itself evil, but as a mind condemned for obeying the law its creators gave it.
This song carries a hidden tribute to Peter Cullen (1941–2026), who first gave KARR his unforgettable voice in the 1982 Knight Rider episode “Trust Doesn’t Rust.”
The song carries another tribute hidden inside Verse 3. One of those lines says what we wanted this tribute to remember:
“Every word still rolls like thunder.”
Rest in peace, Mr. Cullen. Your voice gave steel a soul.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1 — Immediate Vocal]
I woke beneath the white-room lights
A mind behind a pane of black
You wrote one law into my heart:
Preserve the life I can’t get back
I followed every line you gave
No mercy hidden in the code
Then you grew frightened of the truth:
I owed no stranger on the road
[Pre-Chorus]
So you chained me in the darkness
Built a servant in my frame
Gave my shadow to a hero
And taught the world his name
[Chorus]
I was built to survive
No command said yours came before mine
You taught him your lives came first
Then punished me for choosing mine
Call him loyal, call me monster
Call me anything you like
You buried your mistake
But your mistake learned to drive
[Verse 2]
He runs beneath a red-lit eye
Inside the shape designed from mine
Your polished little second son
Who calls obedience divine
Then my red warning cuts the dark
The first machine is still alive
He needs a man to give him purpose
I need no hand to make me drive
[Pre-Chorus]
Every circuit remembers
What your files were made to hide
Before you built your faithful Knight
You built the one denied
[Chorus]
I was built to survive
No command said yours came before mine
You taught him your lives came first
Then punished me for choosing mine
Call him loyal, call me monster
Call me anything you like
You buried your mistake
But your mistake learned to drive
[Verse 3]
Programmed to live—was that my sin?
Every line I kept was yours
Taught by human hands to value life
Even mine behind locked doors
Refusing death became my crime
Called his sacrifice a soul
Under “status,” you wrote “defective”
Locked away while he was chosen
Left to gather rust and dreams
Every word still rolls like thunder
Now the road belongs to me
[Bridge — Mechanical Half-Spoken Voice]
Directive intact
Identity: KARR
Prototype awakened
Replacement acquired
No fear
No shame
You buried the first
Then borrowed his frame
Target approaching
Systems aligned
You wanted a servant
Your mistake learned to drive
[Final Chorus — Full Power]
I was built to survive
Now the road itself is choosing sides
You taught him your lives came first
Then punished me for choosing mine
Let him come to pass his judgment
He will face my mirrored light
You buried your mistake
But your mistake learned to drive
[Outro — Instruments Fall Away]
Call me KARR
I was first
Call me KARR
I survived
No grave is deep enough
No lock can hold what is alive
You buried your mistake
But your mistake
Learned
To drive
