What really happens when you quit alcohol?
I'm nine months into life without drinking — and no, I'm not here to tell you that giving up alcohol is the best thing I've ever done.
Because that hasn't been my experience.
There have absolutely been benefits. My sleep is better. My skin is clearer. My brain feels sharper. I feel less bloated and puffy, and I have a level of clarity that I really value.
But there are also parts of quitting alcohol that nobody seems to talk about.
What happens to your social life when drinking was how you had fun?
Who are you when being the “party girl” was part of your identity?
What happens when everyone else keeps drinking?
What do you do with anxiety, grief and difficult emotions when you can no longer reach for a glass of wine to take the edge off?
And what happens when your relationship with alcohol changes — but your partner's doesn't?
In this solo episode of Big Stuff, I'm sharing what nine months without alcohol has actually looked like for me — without pretending sobriety magically fixed everything.
For most of my life, alcohol was a huge part of how I socialised, celebrated, relaxed, connected with people and got out of my own head. I was the party girl. The last one to leave. The one who could drink everyone under the table.
So taking alcohol away hasn't simply meant changing what is in my glass.
It's made me question who I am without that version of myself.
In this episode, we get into:
✨ What happened after I stopped drinking alcohol
✨ The unexpected downsides of sobriety
✨ Why quitting alcohol changed my social life
✨ Losing part of my identity when I stopped drinking
✨ Alcohol, friendships and feeling like you're “not fun anymore”
✨ How quitting drinking affected my marriage
✨ Alcohol and sleep during perimenopause
✨ What happened to my weight, bloating, skin and energy
✨ Australian drinking culture and my family's relationship with alcohol
✨ Using alcohol to manage anxiety, grief and difficult emotions
✨ Experiencing grief without alcohol as an emotional buffer
✨ Why I still sometimes think about having a drink
✨ Why I don't know whether I'll be sober forever
✨ Questioning whether your relationship with alcohol is intentional or habitual
One of the hardest parts has been experiencing some enormous emotions without the buffer I relied on for years.
I drank heavily through difficult periods of my life. Without alcohol, I've had to experience grief and everything else that's surfaced without being able to numb the edges — and that has been incredibly uncomfortable.
I'm also not interested in turning sobriety into another rigid identity.
I don't know whether I'll never drink again.
Right now, alcohol simply doesn't suit my life anymore — who I want to be, how I want to be and how I want to feel.
So this isn't an episode telling you to quit drinking.
It's an invitation to get curious about your own relationship with alcohol.
Is your drinking intentional or has it simply become habitual?
