A Living Tradition of the Polish Mountains
Welcome to Szczawnica, a beautiful mountain town nestled in the heart of southern Poland, in the picturesque Pieniny Mountains.
Today, we are witnessing one of the most remarkable traditions of Polish highlander culture — the Great Redyk.
This extraordinary event celebrates the centuries-old tradition of shepherding and the seasonal journey of sheep between the mountain pastures and their villages.
Listen to the sound of the bells. Watch as hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of sheep fill the streets of Szczawnica, guided by shepherds known as bacowie and juhasi.
For generations, shepherding has played an important role in the life of the people of the Pieniny Mountains. Their knowledge, customs, music, and way of life have been passed down from one generation to the next.
The traditional clothing, the sound of the shepherds' calls, and the beautiful mountain music all contribute to the unique atmosphere of this celebration.
But Redyk is much more than a colorful parade. It is a reminder of the hard work, dedication, and deep connection between the highlanders, their animals, and the mountain landscape.
This is the Great Redyk of Szczawnica — where history meets the present, and the traditions of the Polish mountains continue to live on.
Thank you for joining us on this wonderful journey through the culture and beauty of the Pieniny region.
Until next time, greetings from beautiful Poland!
