Before mechanical air conditioning, buildings in hot and arid cities did not “make cold.” They managed heat: blocking solar gain, directing useful airflow, using thermal mass to delay daytime heat, cooling with evaporation where conditions allowed, opening up at night, and using the earth’s more stable temperatures below ground.
This documentary follows 15 climate-responsive strategies from traditional architecture and urban form—from shaded streets and mashrabiya screens to windcatchers, courtyards, shavadans, and the historic city of Yazd.
These systems were not magic and were not universally effective. Their performance depended on humidity, wind, water availability, geology, building geometry, and the difference between day and night.
