The player retunes it between pieces by sliding the movable bridges, which is why a koto can sound bright and open in one passage and dark in the next without a single new string being added. Here it is not played as a concert instrument. It plays short figures that sit inside the beat, the way a sampled record would in a hip-hop track — closer to what Nujabes did with Japanese instruments in the late nineties than to anything you would hear in a recital hall. 🚆 ABOUT THE OVERNIGHT TRAIN Japan's overnight trains have almost all been withdrawn — the last of the great ones, the Cassiopeia and the Hokutosei, ran their final services in the 2010s. This series is set on a train that no longer exists: you board late, the corridor lights dim, and the country passes in the dark while you stay awake.
