Vladivostok was founded on July 2, 1860, as a Russian military outpost on the shores of the Golden Horn Bay, and its name is often translated as Rule the East or Lord of the East, depending on the exact interpretation used. The settlement gained official town status in 1880, and by 1888 it had become the administrative center of the surrounding Primorskaya Oblast region, which spurred rapid local infrastructure development across the whole city. Completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1903 made Vladivostok its eastern terminus, transforming the once-remote outpost into a major trade link connecting Europe and Asia together by rail for the very first time in history. The population grew from about 29,000 residents in 1897 to over 100,000 by 1914, and it now stands at roughly 600,000 people living in the city today, with the vast, large majority of them being ethnic Russian residents. Due to its strategic naval base, the Soviet government declared Vladivostok a closed city in 1958, barring most outside visitors and even many ordinary Soviet citizens until it finally reopened again in early January 1992.
