And they did it in the most ridiculous way possible - instead of flying Melbourne to France directly, they went the wrong way around, across the Pacific and over America. The world has gotten too small for these aircraft. To set a record now, you have to deliberately fly a stupid route. So I did exactly that. Frankfurt to JFK is a six-hour transatlantic hop. But if you pretend the Atlantic is lava and fly east instead - over Dubai, Pakistan, China, North Korea, Russia, Alaska and San Francisco - it becomes a 26-hour marathon. 190,000kg of fuel. 200 passengers. Zero cargo. Cost index set to zero, single-engine taxi, lights off, APU off, everything optimised. The A350 was so heavy it couldn't reach cruise altitude for over an hour. I had dinner. I slept. I drove to university and sat an exam. The plane just kept flying itself while my AI co-pilot handled radio calls to Tehran, Beijing and Pyongyang Control. And then, 237 nautical miles from JFK, we ran out of fuel. What follows is a genuine dual-engine-failure glide, a mayday call, and an emergency diversion to a tiny 5,500ft airfield in upstate New York that the aircraft's own flight computer refused to acknowledge exists.
