How to manage an underperforming employee the right way. When someone isn't doing their job, is it something they CAN'T do (a capability issue) or something they WON'T do (a conduct or disciplinary issue)? Here's my step-by-step approach to managing poor performance at work, fairly and with a positive outcome.
What do you do when someone you manage isn't doing their job? Whether it's one mistake, lots of them, or a slow slide below the expected standard, there are only two good outcomes: they improve, or they leave. I call this Two Paths Management.
In this video I take you through a real-world scenario with Steve, a marketing employee who has been with the company for four years. He has started missing deadlines, putting out weak social media content and turning up late. I'll show you how I'd handle the conversations, how to work out "can't do vs won't do", and when to use a capability policy or a disciplinary policy.
In this video:
The two paths: improve to the expected standard, or exit
Why managers often lower the bar, and why you mustn't
How to start the performance conversation (and why you ask before you instruct)
Asking about personal issues: is it any of your business?
Can't do vs won't do: capability vs disciplinary
Why you assume CAN'T until you know it's WON'T (and the employment tribunal risk)
The 6-step process: policy, action plan, review periods, notes, repeat, pick up where you left off
"Silence as assent": how to keep meeting notes that protect you
