Wilder Future: Restoring Winmarleigh Moss

Our peatlands are precious: storing carbon, reducing flooding and providing a safe haven for specialist and often rare plants and animals. 98 per cent of the peatlands in our region have been destroyed or are in such bad condition that they're leaking carbon back into the atmosphere. This can't continue to happen, and we're dedicated to safeguarding the remaining 2 per cent of our precious peatlands before it's too late. Winmarleigh Moss is one of these peatlands. We've been restoring it for many years and have brought it back into fantastic condition, but there is more to do, and with help from the Lancashire Environment Fund we've been able to heal this incredible wildlife refuge yet further. By blocking ditches and building bunds we've stopped huge amounts of water from draining off the site and drying out the bog. A dry bog means an unhealthy bog, where carbon leaks back into the atmosphere and special wetland wildlife can no longer survive. We've also carried out water vole surveys and discovered a thriving population of these mammals on the reserve. With water voles being the UK's fastest declining mammal, it's fantastic to know they're safe at Winmarleigh Moss and these surveys mean we can make sure our work doesn't impact their populations.
