From Vestrahorn to Egilsstaðir: The Stunning Öxi Pass Route Captured on Dashcam

Embark on a scenic journey with me in this dashcam footage, capturing the full experience of my 3-hour drive between Vestrahorn and Egilsstaðir along the Ring Road in East Iceland. In this video, I’m traveling counterclockwise (CCW) along the famous Highway 1, with a twist—I decided to take the shortcut via Öxi Pass instead of staying on the Ring Road the entire time. This route showcases some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes Iceland has to offer. Öxi Pass (Route 939) is a gravel road that cuts around 60 kilometers off the drive between Egilsstaðir and Höfn, compared to the paved Highway 1. Additionally, Öxi Pass offers a great opportunity for drone flying, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. I also provide GPS coordinates of where you can park and safely fly your drone, along with sample drone photography to inspire your shots. By taking this shortcut, I saved time and experienced the raw beauty of Iceland's rugged highlands. However, there are pros and cons to this choice. The main advantage is the shorter distance and the stunning, less-traveled mountain views. On the flip side, the road is steep, unpaved, and can be challenging, especially in poor weather conditions, making it less suitable for those not comfortable with gravel roads. The original footage has been compressed and fast-forwarded into an exciting 1-hour video, allowing you to witness the ever-changing scenery along this route. From ocean views and towering cliffs to majestic mountains and glimpses of glaciers, this drive has it all.
