In 1959, the Government told the men building TSR-2 which engine they were getting, and it wasn’t the one they’d asked for.
Rolls-Royce’s Medway was the designers’ choice. The Ministry wanted the Bristol Olympus, the engine already powering the Vulcan, and it wanted it as much for the future of the British engine industry as for the aircraft.
What followed was one of the hardest engineering jobs Britain had ever attempted: taking a bomber engine built to cruise high and steady and turning it into one that could run at twice the speed of sound for forty-five minutes, then survive the throttles being slammed about at two hundred feet.
It didn’t go quietly. Turbine discs flew out of engines and through test houses. A Vulcan testbed was burned to the ground at Filton. Between December 1962 and July 1964 alone, there were fourteen major failures, and the development bill went from eight million pounds to forty-six million.
Part 4, the final part, picks up on the morning of 27 September 1964, with Roland Beamont and Don Bowen strapped into XR219 at Boscombe Down. It covers the first flight and the test flying that followed, the political fight over the aircraft’s future, the cancellation, the destruction of the airframes and jigs, and the F-111 disaster that followed.
