The Battle Frederick Couldn’t Control — Battle of Zorndorf

On 25 August 1758, Frederick the Great forced the Russian army into battle at Zorndorf—and then watched his carefully prepared attack dissolve into smoke, confusion, retreat, and brutal close-range fighting. The Russians refused to collapse. Prussian infantry began to lose cohesion. Frederick personally tried to rally his men, while cavalry commander Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz repeatedly held back despite the king’s orders, waiting for the moment when his cavalry could actually change the battle. What followed was not the clean Prussian victory Frederick had planned. Command broke down, formations became mixed, soldiers fought increasingly local battles through smoke and dust, and even discipline around the Russian baggage collapsed into looting and drinking. By nightfall, both armies had been mauled. The Russians had survived Frederick’s attempt to destroy them, while the Prussians had stopped the Russian advance. Both sides would find reasons to claim victory. This is the Battle of Zorndorf—one of the most chaotic and contested battles of the Seven Years’ War.
