Bradford's Green Market sold sweets on the thirtieth of October, eighteen eighteen fifty-eight, the way it always had. Within days, twenty people were found to have lost their lives: seven adults, thirteen children, the youngest just seventeen months old. Over two hundred more fell gravely ill. There was no fire, no flood, no war: only a batch of peppermint humbugs, and a poison sold by mistake and passed on despite a warning. This video traces the whole chain: the crowded mill town behind it, the wholesale trade that put sweets on a market stall, the counter where arsenic was weighed out instead of harmless filler, the maker who noticed something wrong and sold the batch anyway, the investigation that followed, and the law it left behind.
