Private terraces, hotel-style amenities, and houses stacked into the sky — why are Chinese developers building homes like these? I’m Chen, an architect. In this video, I join a friend who’s looking to buy a home and visit two new housing developments in Jiangbei, Nanjing. We explore what developers call “fourth-generation housing”: the layouts, terraces, clubhouses, gardens, and the neighborhoods taking shape around them. Beyond the impressive showrooms, I look at the trade-offs in space and cost, why developers are working harder to win buyers, and what a sales centre cannot tell us about everyday life after people move in. This is a firsthand look at two projects in Nanjing—not a claim that all homes in China look like this. What would matter most to you: the apartment itself, the shared amenities, or the surrounding neighborhood? Let me know in the comments.
