Formula 1 rarely admits that common software has failed drivers across the grid but that's what makes the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia so important. The strange scenes at Sepang were not caused by one damaged engine, one bad switch setting, or one team getting its wet-weather plan wrong. The FIA has now identified a common software problem which took power away from several cars during the formation laps. Max Verstappen felt it at the front. Lewis Hamilton felt it behind him. A race that had barely begun became a test of whether the new cars could even function in wet conditions.
