The narrative takes place on July 29, 2010, when the city of Saronica is devastated by the mysterious SMO. Agents known as Subliminers are deployed throughout the city to suppress its population, prompting survivors to form a resistance movement led by a woman named Lily.
Kou Yanami, an agent troubled by his employer’s policies, steals two ancient pistols known as the Crimson from SMO’s arsenal and joins the resistance. Lily attempts to protect Kou from his pursuers but is captured by SMO. Kou then teams up with Lily’s daughter, Yuri Rosenberg, to rescue her and fight the forces occupying the city. Their mission ultimately leads to a confrontation with SMO’s leader, Admiral Zaza, while the origins and power of the Crimson weapons remain central to the story.
The plot is presented through brief story sequences between stages, connecting the shooting action to the characters’ efforts to liberate Saronica.
Players aim and fire at enemies using light guns, with support for two-player simultaneous play. Combat revolves around reacting quickly to incoming threats, targeting enemies accurately, and managing the player’s remaining life.
The game features a range of hostile creatures, including grotesque monsters and heavily armoured or mechanical enemies. Different enemies require different aiming strategies, and the damage inflicted can depend on where a target is hit. Headshots can defeat enemies more efficiently, while other shots can contribute to the score. Boss encounters conclude the stages and require players to identify vulnerable areas and respond to the bosses’ attacks.
The player’s life gauge decreases when enemies land attacks or civilians are accidentally shot. Ammunition must also be reloaded during combat; the Dreamcast version’s manual specifies ten shots per magazine, with light-gun players reloading by aiming away from the screen and pulling the trigger.
An experience gauge provides an additional survival mechanic. Hitting enemies and certain environmental targets increases experience, while missing targets reduces it. When the gauge fills, the character earns an extra life. Collectible items called Deathnuts can also restore life.
Shooting a Death Flower or an object marked “Hit Here” activates the machine-gun power-up. Players hold the trigger to build energy and release it to fire a rapid burst. The machine-gun ammunition supply is displayed onscreen, and effective use of the power-up can help clear groups of enemies. The game also features a Death Flash effect that destroys enemies onscreen without harming civilians.
The main Story Mode consists of six stages: Azalea Street, Zahhou, Polvenir, Desert, Factory, and Saffar. Each culminates in a boss encounter, with the final stage featuring SMO Zaza. The overall structure emphasizes accurate shooting, avoiding harm to civilians, conserving lives, and using special attacks effectively throughout the campaign.
