A love remembered across more than twenty years.
Inspired by The Tales of Ise (Ise Monogatari), “chi-ha-ya-fu-ru” reimagines the story of Ariwara no Narihira and Fujiwara no Takaiko through Takaiko’s eyes.
A white jewel remembered from a night in their youth.
A river dyed crimson with autumn leaves many years later.
And a poem that crosses the long years between them.
This is not a song about returning to a lost love.
It is a song about looking at someone you once loved, after many years have passed, and cherishing not only who he was then, but who he has become — and the long road that brought you both here.

🎵 LYRICS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
[Verse 1]
You took my hand and led me through the night
Tiny lights were shining on the grass
“Are those white jewels?” I asked you
I knew so little that night
Even my rain-soaked sleeves meant nothing
I only held your hand and would not let go
I trusted in the warmth of your hand
[Chorus]
That night has drifted far away
Yet sometimes it returns to me
The wind we felt, the warmth of your hand
Those days I can never return to
[Verse 2]
Beyond the blinds, the autumn deepens
Across the screen, the Tatsuta flows
Beyond that crimson glow
I find your gaze from a long time ago
Your profile wears the passing years
Without a single word between us
I only watch you quietly
[Bridge]
chi-ha-ya-fu-ru
chi-ha-ya-fu-ru
chi-ha-ya-fu-ru―――
Out of this world
Tatsuta River
Dyed crimson
By autumn leaves
[Final Chorus]
Who you were that day
Who you are today
And this long road that brought us here
I cherish it all―――
[Outro]
Through deepest crimson
the water flows
One small white jewel
remains within my heart

🍁 ABOUT “CHI-HA-YA-FU-RU”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Chi-ha-ya-fu-ru” (ちはやぶる) is a makurakotoba, a traditional poetic expression found in classical Japanese waka poetry. In this poem, it precedes kami — “the gods.”
Rather than forcing the phrase into a single English equivalent, this song preserves its original Japanese sound:
chi-ha-ya-fu-ru
In the English version, the phrase is repeated almost like an ancient invocation, opening a doorway from the present into the world of classical Japanese poetry.
The song draws inspiration from this famous waka attributed to Ariwara no Narihira:
ちはやぶる
神代もきかず
竜田川
からくれなゐに
水くくるとは
Chi-ha-ya-fu-ru —
even in the age of the gods,
such a sight was unheard of:
the Tatsuta River,
its waters colored deep crimson by autumn leaves.

📖 ABOUT THIS SONG
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
At the heart of this song are two colors: white and crimson.
The “white jewel” recalls an earlier episode in The Tales of Ise, in which a young woman, being led away through the night, sees the glistening dew and asks what it is.
Many years later, crimson autumn leaves flow across the Tatsuta River in Narihira’s famous poem.
In this song, we imagine those two images connected across more than twenty years.
The young woman who once followed his hand through the night has grown older.
She sees him again after the passing of many years.
There is no need for them to return to the past, and no need for words between them.
She simply sees the years he has lived.
Who he was then.
Who he is now.
And the long road that brought them here.
In this interpretation, “chi-ha-ya-fu-ru” becomes something more than a poem about autumn leaves.
It becomes a reply carried across the years.
Crimson flows through the river.
And somewhere within her heart,
one white jewel remains.
