Steampunk worldbuilding in 4K: airships, floating cities and solarpunk farms above The Frozen North. In this new episode of Retrofutura, a steam-driven polar cruiser crosses the ice toward the cities that hang above the clouds, in a slow cinematic journey through retrofuturistic ports, brass-lit cabins, mechanical automatons, ambient dreamcore skies and croplands grown inside a floating city. PLOT The cruiser leaves at dawn from the cracked ice plains, running low over the frozen ground on jets of steam. It stops at a village of timber domes to take on passengers, mail, a dog team and a crated white bird, then crosses the turquoise flats to the great ice port, where cranes load containers, the fish market burns its braziers and a polar bear hauls a sled along the dock. From the port it climbs for the first time. Above the cloud layer waits the ovoid city, a hull of white stone with an open mouth cut into its flank. Inside is not a street but a field: flat green farmland under shafts of sunlight, greenhouses burning their own lamps, and houses, workshops and balconies stacked up the inner walls. The cruiser lands among the furrows, sets down its passengers, and fills its hold with crates of fruit for the world below. It descends once more to the ice for the last mail run, where an old woman hands the driver a package wrapped in cloth. Then it climbs for good, past the ring of gears and ballast pods that holds the great disc city in the air, and moors at the rim. The driver walks up a snowy street with the package under one arm, sets down the helmet, and steps out onto a deck above the clouds as the aurora rises over the sunset.
