Glazing is the technique of building colour from translucent layers of oil paint laid over a dry, paler underpainting — so light passes through the paint film, strikes the light beneath, and comes back out through the colour. Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) did not invent oil painting, whatever the old legend says; he and his generation perfected this layered method, and no one has matched what he did with it.
This film walks through how glazing works and where to see it: the glowing jewels and brocades of the Ghent Altarpiece (completed 1432), the Madonna of Chancellor Rolin's glazed distances, the Washington Annunciation, the Man in a Red Turban — and above all the Arnolfini Portrait of 1434, where a convex mirror holds the whole room reversed and every texture, from brass to fur to fruit, is a different recipe of underpaint and glaze.
All of the paintings are public domain and are shown directly.
Narrated by Magnus. Part of the MProdYT 8 Painting Techniques series.
