Patients and their families often ask us two important questions:
First, how long will a patient live after a liver transplant?
Second, how long will the transplanted liver function properly?
In this video, Dr. Rahul Saxena, Liver Specialist and Transplant Surgeon from Nagpur, welcomes you to the channel, where we share valuable information about the liver, liver diseases, and liver transplantation.
Let’s first understand that life after a liver transplant depends on several factors.
The most important factor is the patient’s overall health. If a patient has other conditions along with liver cirrhosis—such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or infections like Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C—these can affect recovery and long-term outcomes. Patients whose liver disease was caused by Hepatitis B or C may need to continue medication for life.
Another key factor is lifestyle modification, which plays a crucial role in survival after a transplant. This includes:
Maintaining a healthy diet
Staying physically active
Managing stress
After a liver transplant, it is essential to completely avoid smoking, tobacco, and alcohol.
Regular exercise is also important to maintain overall fitness and support recovery.
Equally important are regular follow-ups. Patients must stay in touch with their transplant team, undergo recommended tests, and take medications on time. Proper follow-up significantly improves transplant success.
Now, let’s talk about survival rates after liver transplantation.
There are two types of survival:
Short-term survival
Long-term survival
Short-term survival refers to survival within the first year after transplant. Out of 100 patients who undergo liver transplantation, about 95% survive the first year, which is an excellent outcome.
For long-term survival:
3-year survival is around 90%
5-year survival is about 85–90%
10-year survival is approximately 80%
Compared to other organ transplants, liver transplant outcomes are very encouraging.
In fact, around 50–60% of patients live for 20–25 years after transplant. There are also thousands of patients worldwide who have lived more than 40–45 years after a successful liver transplant.
With proper care, regular follow-ups, and a healthy lifestyle, patients can live a long and fulfilling life after liver transplantation.
