Arippu Fort (also known as Allirani Fort) is a small but historically significant fortification located about 20km south of Mannar. Unlike the larger, more famous Mannar Fort, Arippu served primarily as a strategic outpost for the lucrative pearl fisheries and as a rest house for colonial officials. Historical Timeline Portuguese & Dutch Origins: Originally built by the Portuguese, the fort was captured and fortified by the Dutch in 1658. It is a small, square-shaped bastion fort, roughly 450 square meters in size. Robert Knox's Escape: The fort is famous in colonial history as the site where Robert Knox, an English sea captain, finally reached safety in 1679 after being held captive by King Rajasinghe II in the Kandyan Kingdom for 19 years. British Period: Under British rule, the first Governor of Ceylon, Frederick North, used the fort to house officers overseeing the pearl banks. He built his famous official summer residence, The Doric, on the beach right next to the fort. Key Features & Legend Architecture: The ruins show a simple square design with two bastions. It was built using brick, coral, and limestone. Queen Alli Raani: Local Tamil legend suggests the fort was built on the site of a much older fortress belonging to Queen Alli Raani, a powerful ruler said to have reigned over the Mannar region. Because of this, it is often referred to locally as Allirani Kottai. Pearl Fisheries: During the 18th and 19th centuries, Arippu was the hub for the "Pearl Fishery" seasons. When the pearl banks were active, thousands of people would descend on this small village, and the fort acted as a command post. Current Status Today, Arippu Fort is in a state of ruin. Much of the structure was abandoned during the decades of civil war. While it is a protected archaeological site, it suffers from significant coastal erosion—similar to the nearby "Doric" bungalow. Travel Tip: If you visit, the area is best explored between July–September or December–February. Avoid the April–June window if possible, as the heat in the Musali area can be quite intense!
