PRP Injection Cost: 6 Questions to Ask Before You Pay

PRP injection cost is one of the most common questions I get. This week a potential patient emailed asking only for my price. No consult, no conversation. It's a fair question. But a $500 PRP shot and a properly dosed, image-guided PRP procedure are not the same treatment, and the price tag won't tell you which one you're getting. I'm Dr. Nikhil Verma, a board-certified interventional spine and PM&R physician at Essential Sports and Spine Solutions in Columbus, Ohio. In this episode of Things I Didn't Learn in Med School, I walk through the 6 questions to ask before any PRP or orthobiologic procedure: 1. What platelet dose am I getting? Studies point to roughly 10 billion platelets for lasting benefit. Ask how much blood they'll draw, which kit they use, and whether they'll give you your platelet dose after the procedure. 2. Is it leukocyte-poor or leukocyte-rich, and why that choice for my condition? 3. Is the injection image-guided with ultrasound or fluoroscopy? 4. Who is actually looking at my MRI, the images or just the report? 5. What should I do beforehand? Medications, recent steroid injections, NSAIDs, sleep, nutrition, alcohol, nicotine, and supplements all matter. 6. What's the plan after the injection? I also touch on early questions around GLP-1 medications and healing, and why PRP doesn't regrow cartilage, plus what it can realistically do for pain and function. The injection is one piece.
