At over one thousand metres above sea level across the high plateau of Ben Avon in the Cairngorms of Scotland, a granite boulder field conceals rare crystalline quartz. Why did these massive crystal cavities survive millions of years of tectonic upheaval and glacial grinding intact while thousands of surrounding veins were pulverised into barren dust? Formed during the Caledonian orogeny four hundred million years ago, these granitic pegmatites were bathed in low-dose natural gamma radiation from surrounding uranium isotopes. Generations of highlanders and Victorian lapidaries gathered these striking stones from remote stream beds, yet the true mechanics behind their preservation remained unexamined. Our investigation explores the geological genesis, mineralogical analysis, and historical working of Scotland's most famous crystal deposits. Which historic mine, quarry, or mineral deposit near your own home have you always wondered about?
