The area's history is tied to the maritime culture of Malay Peninsula's east coast. It served as a fishing settlement and local trading post near the mouth of Besut River. Historically, the broader Besut region was established as an autonomous principality (called the Kingdom of Besut Darul Iman) around 1780 under Tengku Kadir. It was later reunified with the main Terengganu sultanate in 1899. Fast forward to Dec 1941, Kuala Besut holds military history as a landing site for Imperial Japanese forces to capture the nearby Gong Kedak airfield.
