Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy’s story is more than the story of a doctor. It is the story of a woman who challenged the social barriers of her time and created new opportunities for women and children. Born in 1886 in the princely state of Pudukkottai, Muthulakshmi Reddy pursued education at a time when higher education for women was highly unusual. She went on to study medicine, enter public life, and become one of the earliest women legislators in British India. Her journey took her through some of the major social issues of her time — women’s education, child marriage, the Devadasi dedication system, the welfare of girls and women, and access to medical care. She also founded Avvai Home, which provided shelter and education, and played a major role in the establishment of the Cancer Institute at Adyar, Madras. But her story is not simply about achievements. It is also about the society she lived in, the traditions she questioned, the people affected by those traditions, and the difficult debates surrounding social reform. In this documentary, we explore the life, struggles, social reforms and legacy of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy. A woman who entered a world where many doors were closed to women — and spent her life opening them. #MuthulakshmiReddy #DrMuthulakshmiReddy #IndianHistory #WomenInHistory #WomenEmpowerment
