Fireboy & Watergirl in The Forest Temple (often stylized as Fireboy and Watergirl 1) is a landmark cooperative puzzle-platformer developed by Oslo Albet (under Agame / Coolmath Games) and released in November 2009. It is widely considered one of the most played and recognized two-player browser games in web history.
The Premise and Objective
Ancient Exploration: The two elemental spirits—Fireboy and Watergirl—venture into the mysterious, trap-laden depths of the Forest Temple.
The Goal: Both characters must work in tandem to collect their respective elemental diamonds, trigger switches to open pathways, and safely reach their designated elemental exit doors at the end of each chamber.
Core Gameplay Mechanics
Simultaneous Local Co-Op: The game is engineered primarily for two players sharing a single keyboard, though a solo player can control both characters at once:
Fireboy is controlled using the Arrow Keys.
Watergirl is controlled using the A, W, D Keys.
Strict Elemental Rules:
Fireboy can run safely across pools of red lava and collect red diamonds, but instantly vaporizes into ash if he touches blue water.
Watergirl glides harmlessly through pools of water and collects blue diamonds, but is extinguished immediately upon touching lava.
Green Toxic Sludge: Both characters perish instantly if they fall into puddles of green toxic goo.
Environmental Puzzle Solving: Progression depends heavily on puzzle logic—one player holds down a pressure plate or pulls a lever while the other crosses moving platforms, pushes stone cubes to block hazards, or holds elevators in place.
Stage Progression and Level Tree
The Temple Map: The campaign uses a branching pyramid-shaped level map, allowing players to choose alternative routes through the temple.
Level Archetypes: Stages feature varied challenges:
Standard Hexagonal Rooms: Focus on general puzzle solving and diamond collection.
Triangular Speed Rooms: Require rapid execution where the platforms move automatically or time limits are tighter.
Diamond Rooms: Focus on navigating narrow passages to grab a single, hard-to-reach green gem.
Rankings: Players earn an "A" rank by clearing stages quickly, collecting all diamonds, and completing the run without any deaths.
