Sit down for five minutes and learn how to ask the way in Moroccan Arabic (Darija), knock on a door and greet an old friend. Lucy has a paper with an address and a flask of mint tea. Her friend Manal is from Marrakech and knows the way, until the lane ends in a wall. Lucy asks a young shopkeeper: straight on, right at the bakery oven, then left. Nobody opens the door, but a neighbour knows where Ħmed sits every afternoon. A year and a half after her ward in Manchester, Lucy finds him at the café. Five short stories in order, every word lit as it is spoken: the Darija, then English, Dutch and French, and the Arabic script. After each story: its key words, heard once, with a pause to say them yourself. At the end: a review of the ten most useful sentences, each one twice. Listen, pause, repeat. A note on two words: Ħmed greets Lucy with "a benti". Literally "my daughter", it means "my dear": the warm way an older Moroccan speaks to a younger woman. And Lucy calls him "a sidi Ħmed": "sidi" is a respectful "sir" in front of a man's name.
