Operation Hailstone: The 48-Hour Raid That Crippled Japan’s Truk Base

In February 1944, the U.S. Navy launched Operation Hailstone against Truk Lagoon, one of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s most important forward bases in the Pacific. Although much of Japan’s heavy fleet had already withdrawn, Task Force 58 found a vast network of aircraft, merchant ships, tankers, transports, fuel supplies, and military installations still concentrated inside the lagoon. Over two days, American carrier aircraft attacked Truk’s airfields and shipping while U.S. surface warships intercepted vessels attempting to escape, transforming the fortified anchorage from a protected naval sanctuary into a devastated logistical hub.
