Before a single barrel of oil is produced, an offshore project can cost billions of dollars. So why do energy companies keep taking that risk, and what exactly are they paying for?
This documentary follows the money from the first seismic survey to the financial model that decides whether a project makes sense: why companies go offshore, the very different kinds of rigs and platforms (jack-ups, semi-submersibles, drillships, fixed platforms and FPSOs), the engineering challenge of building in the ocean, the hidden world of subsea equipment, the logistics nobody sees, and the risks that can derail a multibillion-dollar investment.
