The six pieces for a cappella choir were set to French texts by Rainer Maria Rilke. Rilke extols the ambivalence of the natural world: the beauty of the seasons, the excesses of nature, and nature as a place of refuge, but also its symbolism for death and impermanence. Hindemith’s six short pieces are quite varied and each give a snapshot of the world as presented by Rilke’s text.
