There's something about an empty highway in winter that makes the world feel a little bigger. The road stretches out toward the mountains, disappearing beneath a low ceiling of gray. Snow covers the fields and hillsides, the pavement is dark with moisture, and there's barely another soul in sight. It's the kind of afternoon where you can drive for miles without seeing much change in the landscape. I love weather like this. The wind moves steadily across the open country, catching against anything in its path. Sometimes it's a thin, restless whistle. Other times it comes through with enough force to rattle the microphone, carrying little bits of sleet along with it. There's a deeper sound underneath, too, and occasionally something higher up that almost reminds me of an aircraft passing somewhere above the clouds. And then there are those little things you might miss if you weren't paying attention. A bell ringing faintly somewhere in the distance. A little traffic moving along a road you can't quite see. Sounds that drift in for a while, get tangled up in the wind, and eventually disappear again. I think that's my favorite part of this one. The highway looks almost completely deserted, but every so often the weather lets you hear a little evidence of the world continuing somewhere beyond the frame. Maybe you're standing beside the road, taking a break from a long drive. Maybe you've pulled off somewhere to watch the weather moving across the mountains. Or maybe you're just enjoying the peculiar comfort of being somewhere cold, quiet, and far away from everything familiar. Whatever brought you here, there's no hurry. Stay a while. Let the wind blow, let the occasional car pass somewhere in the distance, and enjoy a few miles of winter without having to go anywhere at all. *10 hours of layered winter wind, blowing sleet, occasional microphone rumbles, distant bells, and faint highway traffic.* A little place to disappear into for sleep, reading, relaxation, or simply enjoying the weather. Thanks for coming along. — Long Storm Jones #WinterWind #HighwayAmbience #LongStormJones
