Oral and written accounts recall 19th-century conflicts between Chewa communities and Ngoni (Angoni) groups, particularly around the hills and strongholds of Kasungu. These events form part of Malawi’s pre-colonial resistance, survival, and social transformation. Over time, Ngulu ya Nawambe also became embedded in national memory through its association with Kasungu as a political and cultural landmark. The name represents place, struggle, leadership, and remembrance. This recording is presented as MBIRI, history preserving Malawian heritage through sound, narration, rhythm, and memory.
