You hear "move your feet fast" in every lesson, but moving quickly doesn't automatically turn into power in your swing. Telling someone to just step faster is practically the same as teaching them nothing — footwork changes with every situation, and you need to know exactly how to move your body in each one. I'm not a former professional player, so instead of speaking intuitively I studied the precise principles, and for 16 years I've looked at how athletes get faster and stronger. In this video I cover two points. First, the split step: the reason you lift your feet isn't to jump high, it's to use elasticity — the instant your foot touches back down, you push off without delay. If you stay on the ground too long, you drain your strength and still can't move fast. I also show a jumping jack drill so you can feel where the effort actually belongs: not the front of your thighs, but the soles of your feet, with your toes pointing forward and your weight going through the metatarsal head under the big toe instead of the little toe. Second, how the legs work in the stroke. Many people bend and straighten their knees, which sends power upward — but the power you need goes forward, through rotation. From a closed stance the back leg pushes off as the knee rotates forward while the front leg gives stability; from an open stance the knee that was pointing back rotates forward as the weight shifts from little toe to big toe. If your foot lifts while you rotate, you become unstable and can't finish the shot, so press the big toe down firmly. 0:00 Fast feet alone don't create power 1:17 The split step: do you know why you do it? 2:19 Elasticity — push the instant you land 3:29 Jumping jack drill: 20 reps, 3 sets 4:38 Not your thighs — the soles of your feet 5:59 Foot shape: toes forward, off the little toe 6:49 The metatarsal head under the big toe 7:55 Legs in the swing: rotate forward, not upward 9:55 Practice: closed stance and open stance strokes 10:56 What I didn't cover: crossover step and gravity step A note on this video This is the English version of a Korean video. The audio is an AI dub of my own voice, and the subtitles match what you hear.
