It's six months after everyone vanished. You and Nova might be the last two people on Earth. Two people can make a family… but can two people make a species? In this animated What If, we dig into the real genetics of starting over: hidden faulty genes, why cousins and siblings matter, what cheetahs teach us about tiny populations, and the famous "50/500 rule." Then a storm floods the one place that could save humanity, and Max has to choose between the future of the species… and Nova. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 The flood 0:15 The world is empty 0:45 Day one 1:26 The scary math 2:18 The vault and the lab 2:51 The cost 3:26 Nova's rule 4:00 The storm 4:48 The choice 5:08 After the water 5:34 A voice on the radio 5:42 Is any of this real? 6:17 What do you think? 🔬 The science • Brothers and sisters share about half their DNA; cousins share about an eighth. • Cheetahs are so genetically alike that unrelated cheetahs often accept each other's skin grafts. • The 50/500 rule (Ian Franklin, 1980): roughly 50 individuals to avoid short-term inbreeding problems, roughly 500 for long-term health. Biologists still debate the exact numbers. • A 2023 genetic study suggested human ancestors dropped to about 1,300 breeding individuals around 900,000 years ago, for over 100,000 years. • Liquid nitrogen keeps frozen cells at −196 °C, and well-insulated storage tanks can stay cold for weeks without power. The empty world is fiction. The genetics are not. 💬 How few people do YOU think it would take to restart humanity? And which What If should we do next? Tell us in the comments. 👍 Like if Nova's knock got you, and subscribe for Part Two. #WhatIf #Humanity #Science #Genetics #Animation #LastPeopleOnEarth
