Many English learners get confused when Americans ask, “How are you?” That’s because “How are you?” can mean two different things in American English. Sometimes, it’s simply a greeting—almost like saying “Hi!” The person usually isn’t expecting a detailed answer. A simple “Good, thanks! How are you?” sounds perfectly natural. But sometimes, someone is genuinely asking how you are because they’re concerned about you. In that situation, a more honest or detailed answer makes sense. In this video, I explain how to tell the difference and how to respond naturally in both situations. Have you ever been confused when an American asked you, “How are you?” Share your experience in the comments—I’d love to hear it!
