If you’re a runner who regularly feels a pinch, ache, or deep discomfort in the front of your hip, your first instinct may be to stretch your hip flexors. But what feels “tight” isn’t always a flexibility problem—and repeatedly stretching an irritated area can sometimes make symptoms worse.
The iliopsoas, commonly referred to as the hip flexor, plays an important role in running. It helps bring the leg forward while also contributing to control and stability around the hip and pelvis. When this muscle or its tendon becomes overloaded, discomfort may develop deep in the front of the hip or near the groin.
Runners may notice symptoms during hills, speed workouts, climbing stairs, getting in and out of a vehicle, or after sitting with the hip bent for an extended period. Some may also experience clicking or snapping in the front of the hip.
