📜 Description Burgundy and France, between 1380 and 1430 — the years when court painters moved freely between kingdoms and their work began to look alike everywhere. Art historians call it International Gothic. Two hours of original piano, set in a walled garden in May, below a castle where the court has gone out for the day. 🎹 About the music The same courts hired the painters and the composers. While the Limbourg brothers were painting calendar pages for the Duke of Berry, Dufay and Binchois were writing chansons for the Burgundian court — often in the same household, sometimes on the same page of the same manuscript. This was the moment when thirds became consonant and secular song moved to the centre of music. The piano here borrows that grammar: modal melody, open fifths, plain unornamented lines, triple meter that lilts rather than marches. ✒️ Story Note The court rode out this morning and the garden has been empty since. On the turf bench someone left a circlet of woven flowers, a book of songs lying open, and a lute set down on its side, as though they meant to come back before the others called. The linen cloth beside them is still folded. Roses have opened along the wall, the orchard is in young leaf, and in a room above, a page of blue and rose borders waits with the gold leaf already cut. Nothing is finished.
