The second of February 1989, Afghanistan, night. A Soviet Mil Mi-24 goes down and both crew members die. It is the last Soviet Mi-24 shot down in the war, and the loss shows a weakness its designers never weighed against a shoulder-fired missile. This video covers twelve Russian and Soviet attack helicopters in order of development: the armed Mi-4AV and Mi-8TV, the Mi-24 family (A, V, P and Mi-35M), the Mi-28N and Mi-28NM, the Kamov Ka-50 Black Shark, Ka-52 Alligator, naval Ka-52K Katran, and the Ka-58 Black Ghost, which may exist only as a model kit. Where sources disagree or go quiet, such as the Mi-28 vs Ka-50 selection or the Ka-58’s status, the video says so.
